The Tulsa Higher Education Consortium will host an event for immigrant and refugee communities to share information on higher education options in Tulsa. The Consortium and higher education partners will discuss how to begin or restart a journey towards degree completion in Tulsa, leading to professional independence and economic mobility. Registration for Perspectives Session 2 is now open! We're excited to partner with The Tulsa Higher Education Consortium to create conversation related to Higher Education and Employment trends across Oklahoma and the Tulsa region. The discussion aims to bring together higher education professionals, K-12 counselors and teachers, and business and industry leaders. Dr. Emisha Maytubby, Family and Consumer Sciences Instructor, at Langston University will discuss changes and innovations made in her courses due to COVID. While these course alterations were forced and made swiftly, many actually had a positive impact on student success and will have permanent place in the course structure. Dr. Maytubby will present for the first half of the presentation and then lead discussion with participants to share their own pandemic innovations that are here to stay. Beginning the higher education journey at a community college is often an affordable and accessible option for students today. However, with more students looking to community colleges, it is imperative that the path to a bachelor's degree is paved and ready to welcome transfer students with a smooth transition. In order to first understand how to adequately support transfer students, we must first understand the barriers they encounter. Officer Jesse Guardiola serves as the Hispanic Outreach Director and minority workforce expert for the Tulsa Police Department and President of a nationally recognized consulting firm. Dr. Ana Hernández Kent is a senior researcher for the Institute for Economic Equity (IEE) at the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. She conducts research, performs data analysis and advises on issues of economic equity. Her primary research interests include: Examining economic disparities and opportunities through a demographic lens Exploring wealth outcomes and wealth inequality Highlighting the role of systemic biases and historical factors in facilitating or blocking wealth accumulation Dr. Hernández Kent will expand on her paper titled "First-Generation College Graduates Get a Financial Boost, but Don't Catch Up" and discuss wealth and economic outcomes of first-generation college students. Join Josiah Robinson and Irissa Baxter-Luper, two Oklahoma specialists in LGBTQ+ higher education inclusion, to strengthen your foundational understanding of the language, culture, and best practices for supporting individuals within the LGBTQ+ community.
